Absence makes the heart grow suspicious when you are discussing Detroit Red Wings prospect playing time.
The Grand Rapids Griffins' decision not to play Sebastian Cossa in any of their eight AHL playoff games prompted considerable debate and plenty of rumors in the hockey world. Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli of Hockey 24/7 listed Cossa as the No. 6 player on his NHL Trade Board .
Seravalli reported that the Cossa asking price is mostly a player who could help the Red Wings now, although he also says Yzerman would consider a second draft pick. Cossa was selected 15th overall in 2021 and a second-round draft pick return would leave the Detroit fan base unsatisfied.
Defenseman Morgan Reilly is No. 1 on the Seravalli trade board, followed by St. Louis forward Jordan Kyrou and Vancouver forward Jake DeBrusk . There are six goalies and Cossa ranks second behind Blues veteran Jordan Binnington (No. 4).
It's important to remember that no one is reporting anything from Detroit sources.
Here what we know as fact. Both Cossa and Michal Postava had excellent seasons in Grand Rapids, but Postava was more consistent in the second half of the season. The decision to play him in the postseason was about rewarding him for his level of play.
Would the Red Wings trade Cossa? The answer is 'Yes' if GM Steve Yzerman believes it benefits the team. He has said that numerous times since becoming Detroit GM. He will trade anyone if it improves the team.
There are factors that could influence a Cossa decision: Cossa would need to clear waivers to go back to Grand Rapids next fall if he doesn't make the Red Wings. It is assumed he would be claimed and Detroit would receive nothing in return.
The Red Wings are deep in quality, young goalies, particularly with Rudy Guimond rising in the ranks. Trey Augustine was the No. 1 goalie among NHL affiliated prospects in TSN's recent ranking. Cossa was ranked 20th in that ranking among all prospects.
Postava has plenty of respect within the organization, and Toledo Walleye netminder Carter Gylander and 6-foot-4 Slovak Michal Pradel are drawing notice.
The biggest Con to trading Cossa is that he is 6-foot-7 and he works hard at his craft. He has put his time in at the AHL level and it would be difficult to watch him end up as a star on another NHL team. And he's only 23. In the NHL, the average age for goalies arriving in the league is 24 or 25.
