The 16-team Stanley Cup Playoff bracket is complete, as every team that needed to win Monday to secure a spot did, including the Philadelphia Flyers , who became the willing opponent for the Pittsburgh Penguins in Round One. Will James has full coverage of the Flyers’ victory, which fittingly happened in a shootout. Philly has just 27 regulation wins all season. We examined the Penguins’ evolution and what we’ve learned about the team over the last couple of weeks.
Elsewhere in the Daily, the Edmonton Oilers have found a goalie for the playoffs and its not Tristan Jarry . A defenseman that Kyle Dubas signed to a hefty $60 million contract will be available on the NHL trade market this summer. And David Carle is again becoming a hot commodity after his Denver University won another national championship.
I took a leisurely stroll home Monday, stopping at a Roy Rogers in Cumberland to write the column. I don’t recall the last time I had Roy Rogers, but there used to be one in downtown Pittsburgh with a curved floor to ceiling glass overlook. It was part atrium, part eating in an aquarium that I thought was just the coolest. I think it was the closed down McDonalds across from the Wood Street stop, but I don’t remember. I didn’t see the Gold Rush sammy on the menu, but I went with the Double R, which was a piece of ham slapped on the burger. The RR burgers are so much high quality than McD’s or even Wendy’s. That chain needs to make a comeback.
Today, I’ll knock out the podcast, hopefully I can get Philly Hockey Now’s Will James on the show.
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: What we’ve learned about these Penguins, and who will be the starting goalie in the playoffs. I took some Qs after the game Sunday, and when a national type TV guy you respect asks, you answer! Here are 3 Penguins Thoughts .
And, the playoffs are set. Tickets are available here. It is Flyers vs. Penguins .
Philly Hockey Now: Clinched. It was a rough road, but beginning in early March through the end, the Philadelphia Flyers stacked wins.
The Flyers’ lack of regulation wins has to be concerning. Also, Rick Tocchet’s choice of ties. Ugly, but black and gold, eh?
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Sportsnet: Cue the trade rumors. Four years ago, Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas signed Morgan Reilly to a seven-year, $60 million deal. Toronto is now sinking like a stone, and even the player admits he might have just played his last game as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs , and he doesn’t know what comes next .
The Athletic ($): What is next for the Washington Capitals ? Pierre LeBrun reports that it’s the trade market and maybe some aggressive pitches for a scoring winger to complete their rebuild .
I can’t help but wonder if the current mediocrity created by the flat cap is giving GMs false hope that they can finish rebuilds faster. In two or three years, we’re going to have a few more great teams again. And we might have poor teams selling talent because they can’t afford to spend to the cap. The bar is going to be raised again; I think.
Sportsnet EDM: The Oilers have found their playoff goalie, and it’s not Tristan Jarry. Connor Ingram is rounding into form for the Oilers at the right time .
NHLtraderumors.me: David Carle. He turned down big money last summer to stay at Denver. He delivered another national championship. Can a team pry him out this year ?
Sometimes, where you are and what you love is more important than any “next step.”
TSN: I have to fill out my ballot, maybe today. The Hart Trophy is a tight race, and Canadian media is cheering on the impossible decision .
I really wish the Sharks had made the playoffs so I could credibly put Macklin Celebrini in the top three. He deserves it.
Forever Blueshirts: Stick taps to goalie Jonathan Quick . He was a dominant netminder for 10 years as the LA Kings and Chicago Blackhawks battled for dynastic control of the NHL. That rivalry was equal to or greater than the Penguins-Capitals, because they were doing battle in the Western Conference Final. For five straight years, it was Chicago or LA to win the Cup. Monday night, current New York Rangers goalie, 40-year-old Jonathan Quick played his last game.
Time keeps on slippin’ into the future.
