FOXBOROUGH – Drake Maye can always dream.
Before the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye worked out in Mobile, Ala., with then-former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers . The eight-time Pro Bowler gave Maye advice and helped mentor the young quarterback before the Patriots selected him with the No. 3 overall pick.
That's why Maye was pleased when he saw that the 44-year-old Rivers was coming back to the NFL when he signed with the Indianapolis Colts this week. The veteran, who signed with Indy's practice squad, could start this weekend for the first time since the 2020 season.
Maye said he was happy to see one of his mentors back in the NFL.
"I think it's awesome. I think it's pretty cool," Maye said. "When we were down there, I did draft training in Mobile, and he lived somewhere down there. The biggest thing was he still throws it good. Shoot, that was two springs ago. He was slinging it good. What a quarterback, what a competitor. He's the ultimate competitor. I'm sure he knows the offense well and
"I'm sure he still slings it great. I saw some of his press conference, that was pretty funny. Great guy, and when I was around him, he was great to me. Pretty cool with something like that."
Before the 2024 NFL Draft, Maye told ESPN's Adam Schefter that he picked Rivers' brain about how he stayed healthy for so long in the NFL. Rivers was in the NFL for 17 seasons (2004 to 2020). After starting for the first time in 2006, the quarterback played in every game from 2006 to 2020.
Maye (6-foot-4, 225 pounds) has a similar build to Rivers (6-foot-5, 228 pounds). The Patriots can only hope that he shows the same longevity in the NFL.
Rivers last played in 2020 with the Colts. Despite being retired for the last five years, the veteran returns after Indianapolis lost starting quarterback Daniel Jones to a season-ending Achilles injury.
When asked if he'd like to still be playing when he's 44, Maye said, "Shoot, if I'm moving around a little bit still, I hope so. Play as long as I can."
