Drake Maye is now the third member of the club.
The second-year Patriots quarterback reached 4,000 passing yards in a season with his 256 in Sunday’s 42-10 win over the Jets. He became just the third New England quarterback to hit that total in a season, joining Tom Brady , who did it 11 times, and Drew Bledsoe, who got there twice.
Maye gets additional credit for hitting the mark in 16 games, as Brady and Bledsoe each played before the schedule was expanded to 17 games.
Maye was asked how it felt to be in the conversation with the two Patriots ’ icons.
“I wouldn’t say I’m in the conversation with them two. Those are probably the two best in Patriots (history). So it’s an honor,” said Maye, who then spread credit. “Like we say in the offensive room, it takes everybody. Eleven on every play. If it’s me throwing for that many yards or throwing for 20 yards, whatever it takes to win. That’s the only thing I care about, our win-loss record.”
Maye, who is now 16-12 in two seasons as a starter, came in needing just 53 yards to reach the milestone. He reached that in the first quarter. He spent most ot the second half of the bench with New England well ahead.
Bledsoe’s 4,555 in 1994 is still the best for a second-year Patriots quarterback. Maye would need 353 against Miami to beat that.
