The Philadelphia Flyers raised eyebrows everywhere when they extended a record-breaking offer sheet to Anaheim Ducks forward Leo Carlsson , a five-year, $90 million pact that carried an $18 million salary cap hit, the highest of any player in NHL history.

And while the Flyers would have been made to surrender four first round draft selections to the Ducks as compensation had they not matched the offer, Ducks GM Pat Verbeek announced the club did in fact match the offer on Thursday, meaning Carlsson is now under Anaheim's control for the next five years.
Despite the bold swing at the fences, Flyers GM Daniel Briere released a statement indicating that they knew they were risking Anaheim matching the offer sheet. Still, they remain committed to building a long-term winner on the ice.

"We understood this outcome was possible when we made the offer," Briere's statement read via the Flyers official X account. "While the result isn't what we hoped for, our goal does not change – we remain committed to pursuing every opportunity that will strengthen our team and continue to build towards becoming a consistent and perennial contender without sacrificing our future."
