The Texas A&M Aggies' season is heading in the wrong direction following a 27-6 loss to the Missouri Tigers on Saturday.
After starting the season 2-0, Mike Elko's squad has squandered that momentum with losses to Kentucky, LSU, and Missouri as they tumble down the SEC standings.
Elko, who has never been one to appreciate the media and its coverage of him , was asked after the latest loss what he'd say to A&M fans who might be losing faith in the season. The third-year coach used the opportunity to call out one of the biggest sites covering his team.
"There's a difference to me between the fan base and social media. So there's one group that I really don't care much about," said Elko. "Billy's cesspool can go be Billy's cesspool. Our fan base, stay with us, be behind us. We're going to build something that we told you we were going to build. So we're in a really bad spot right now, but we'll work our way out of it."
While the uninitiated might be confused about what Elko was referring to, Aggies fans know he meant TexAgs and its executive editor and co-owner, Billy Liucci. The independent sports media site and forum has become one of the most critical places for Texas A&M fandom. It's no ordinary college sports team blog; it's an ecosystem unto itself, with over 50 community forums, tens of thousands of users, and a radio/podcast network. It also covers Aggies football religiously , which isn't always a good thing for a head coach when the team is losing.
We've seen several media-related signs that a football team is in deep trouble this year. In Maryland, they've stopped reporters from asking follow-up questions during Mike Locksley press conferences. In the NFL, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have banned media from being in the stadium tunnels when players and coaches are there. Now, at Texas A&M, the head football coach is calling out one of the biggest media sites covering his program amid a string of troubling losses.
"Going to show restraint here (for now) and get back to answering questions, but the head coach losing 27-6, then immediately calling out an incredibly large portion of the loyal but also understandably frustrated fan base was a wildly unnecessary misstep," Liucci posted on X on Saturday .
Indeed. This is simply not the kind of thing that tends to go well. And if nothing else, it's going to send a whole lot of people to TexAgs to find out what they're saying about Elko's program.
