Drake Maye has firmly put himself in the MVP conversation with the leap he made from Year 1 to Year 2. And after Matthew Stafford ’s poor performance against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night that included three interceptions, many believe it’s the New England Patriots quarterback’s honor to lose.
“I think the way he’s played all season long, we continue to try to knock him down because of who they played and all that other nonsense,” Patriots Super Bowl champion Devin McCourty said on “Get Up.” “ Drake Maye ’s not the one who put the schedule together. You put them out there, he knocks them all down.
“You saw the performance this past week against the Jets ,” he added . “But nonetheless he was out there balling, throwing touchdown passes. I think his ascension in year two, what he’s been able to do with Josh McDaniels, and the way Matthew Stafford performed last night now to me makes Drake Maye the MVP favorite.”
Co-host Dan Graziano agreed saying he thinks Maye will end up winning the annual award, but noted Christian McCaffrey is someone that deserves a look.
“The 49ers have come from nowhere to be on the verge of the No. 1 seed, this guy has kept it all together,” the NFL insider said . “He’s seventh in the league in catches. Not among running backs, among everybody. He has over 2,000 yards from scrimmage.
“To me it’s a quarterback award, and in a lot of ways justifiably so,” Graziano added . “But in a year where you can ding everybody else’s case at quarterback, I think it’s worth talking about.”
Maye had five touchdowns — including four touchdowns — and eclipsed the 4,000 passing yard mark in the Patriots ’ dominant win over the New York Jets on Sunday. He did it all while being under the weather , too.
The 23-year-old’s 30 touchdowns this season is tied for third in the NFL, while his 76.5 QBR leads the league.
Maye will look to carry the strong regular season into New England ’s Week 18 finale against the Miami Dolphins before they playoffs begin.
