Since the beginning of the 2025-26 season, Giannis Antetokounmpo 's future with the Milwaukee Bucks has been under constant speculation. After years of bold but largely unsuccessful experimentation, it clearly seems that this partnership has reached a boiling point.
Three consecutive first-round eliminations forced the team into taking a risky decision of surrounding Giannis with a bunch of role players and that gamble has clearly backfired, with the team falling out of the Play-In berths. Naturally, speculations about the two-time MVP wanting a way out have intensified.
For his harshest critics, this downturn became another opportunity to question his loyalty, with some even suggesting that he had fallen out of love with Milwaukee - the city that embraced him and his family, gave them a home, brought them out of misery and turned him into a global superstar. However, the 10-time All-Star firmly shut down those claims, making it clear that his bond with the city runs far deeper than most can even understand.
Giannis explains what the city of Milwaukee means to him
From an individual standpoint, this season hasn't been a disappointing one for Giannis. Though injuries have limited his appearances, he is averaging 28.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game this season. Even then, with the Bucks ranking amongst the bottom 10 teams, both offensively and defensively, it shows how the problem is everything around Giannis.
An inexperienced supporting cast mixed with veterans well past their prime hasn't been capable of sustaining winning basketball. As a result, as losses piled up and the team started trailing by 30 to 35 points at their home court, frustrated Bucks fans began booing indiscriminately and Giannis found himself caught in that storm despite giving everything he had on the court.
Though the sight of witnessing an entire arena of fans, where you were previously motivated with MVP chants, booing you, understandably hurt. Even then, Giannis has refused to throw the city of Milwaukee under the bus.
Amid reports suggesting that the Golden State Warriors , Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves desperately want to land the two-time MVP, Antetokounmpo clarified how his affection nd gratitude towards Milwaukee hasn't faded one bit.
"I got married in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. And also, legally, from the courthouse. And also, I've had my kids here. My father is buried here," the Greek Freak said . "So tell me you, when I open the passport of my kids, and it says born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, my dad is buried here, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin."

Antetokounmpo reveals the true desire of his heart
The reality is far more complex than most would want to realize. The Bucks either need time to develop players who can genuinely support Giannis in another title run, or they must accept that his championship window may be better served elsewhere.
So, from a purely basketball standpoint, leaving might be the most practical option given the prime years he still has left. Yet emotionally, the story is different.
Additionally, the 2021 Finals MVP made it clear that if he had complete control over the current situation, he would want nothing more than to retire as a Buck. His love for Milwaukee, its fans and what the franchise represents in his journey remains intact. However, any decision to move on wouldn't stem from resentment but would be born out of circumstances.
"If you ask me what do I really want, deep down in my heart? I want to be a Milwaukee Buck until I retire and win a championship here ," Giannis added. "End of sentence ."
That being said, while in the coming hours the noise around Giannis' future would continuously grow stronger, questioning his love for the city of Milwaukee is completely irrational and unfair.
