The San Francisco Giants may be nearing another turning point with Rafael Devers , whose controversy has pushed trade deadline speculation back into the center of the club's difficult season.
The former Boston Red Sox third baseman's latest issue started Sunday during a 2-1 loss vs. the Miami Marlins . After drawing a ninth-inning walk, Devers pushed back when manager Tony Vitello sent rookie Jonah Cox to pinch-run. The exchange created a public scene during a series-ending defeat and added another layer to San Francisco's frustration in what has been a miserable 2026 campaign.
Devers later apologized to Vitello, and the Giants put him back in the lineup Tuesday. Still, the reaction around baseball did not fade. With the Giants buried in the NL West and searching for direction, the incident drew increased attention to whether the front office could consider a dramatic move.
New York Post Sports' Jon Heyman took to X, formerly Twitter, and framed the situation as more than one emotional moment after reporting on the organization's stance toward Devers.
"The Red Sox, in need of offense and leadership, dumped Devers. Now a year after acquiring him, the Giants are open to dumping him, too. Must be the media."
Heyman's post carried weight because it tied San Francisco 's frustration to the Red Sox's decision to move Devers last year. The wording suggested the issue now stretches beyond one dugout disagreement.
The financial part complicates any deal. Devers' contract runs through 2033 and still carries roughly $250 million, meaning the club would likely need to absorb significant salary to create a realistic trade path.
The Giants also risk losing leverage if rival teams believe the organization wants out. Any interested club could use that perception in negotiations before the deadline.
For president of baseball operations Buster Posey , the situation now becomes a test of direction. What once looked like a franchise-defining acquisition could become the clearest sign that the Giants are ready to reset.
