Entering Game 3 of the Western Conference Final, trailing the Vegas Golden Knights two games to none, the Colorado Avalanche appeared to have complete control after erupting for three goals in the opening 20 minutes at T-Mobile Arena.
Colorado also welcomed back defenseman Cale Makar , who had missed the first two games of the series. However, after the opening period, everything unraveled for the Avalanche , and the club now finds itself with its back against the wall. Vegas scored five unanswered goals the rest of the way, including a three-goal second period that was capped by Tomas Hertl 's go-ahead goal in the third, and won 5-3 .
Captain Mark Stone , making his own return to the lineup, sparked Vegas just 19 seconds into the second period before longtime Golden Knights forward William Karlsson added another tally. Keegan Kolesar later tied the game after poking the puck into the net following a shot that bounced off the post, marking his first goal of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
In the third period, Hertl danced around an Avalanche defenseman before beating goaltender Scott Wedgewood with a backhand shot, sending the sellout crowd in Las Vegas into a frenzy. With Wedgewood pulled for an extra attacker late in regulation, Vegas sealed the comeback victory thanks to an empty-net goal from Brett Howden , his 10th of the postseason.
Wedgewood finished the game with 18 saves on the 22 shots he faced, while Vegas goaltender Carter Hart was busier, making 32 saves.
The Golden Knights can punch their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2023 if they beat the Avalanche in Game 4, which will be on Tuesday evening from T-Mobile Arena.
