Fans of the Miami Heat were almost inconsolable after the team lost to the Charlotte Hornets by a solitary point in overtime, 127-126, in the Play-In Tournament on Tuesday.
The painful defeat ended the Heat's season. They failed to qualify for the playoffs, snapping their six-year streak, as they bowed out in the Play-In Tournament for the first time in four straight appearances.
In a report from Miami Herald's Barry Jackson, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra rued that they were just a few wins short of earning an outright berth in the playoffs. He also scoffed at the narrative that it was a wasted campaign, reiterating how tough it is to sustain success in the NBA.
"I truly felt that there could have been four to six more wins on the table for us, and that did not happen. That also could have changed our context of how we felt about this team," said Spoelstra.
"We don't like this feeling at all of being off in the middle of April. I also think that you can't just discredit that or discard it and say how horrible it is that we made the playoffs six straight years and didn't win a championship. This is a hard business, and there aren't a lot of teams that can do that every year."
The Heat's last stint in the NBA Finals was in 2023, losing to the Denver Nuggets in five games. After that, they suffered back-to-back exits in the first round of the playoffs.
Miami tallied a 43-39 record this season—a six-win improvement from the previous campaign.
Spoelstra, who had his 18th season in South Beach, also credited his young players, including Jaime Jaquez Jr. , Kel'el Ware, Pelle Larsson , and Kasparas Jakucionis , for making key contributions.
