LaMelo Ball scored the game-winning layup with 4.7 seconds left, while Miles Bridges made the game-saving block on Davion Mitchell as time expired, giving the Hornets another chance at ending their nine-year drought in the playoffs.
The Heat stole the lead with 8.7 ticks remaining after Tyler Herro sank three free throws. They, however, failed to stop Ball in the ensuing possession.
Fans of the Heat were incensed on X after the bitter defeat.
"I'VE NEVER BEEN SO HAPPY ABOUT A LOSS IN MY LIFE," said @AdebayoIsland.
"The same problems you had in the regular season were the same problems you had in the playoffs. I hope this team looks completely different next season," added @Ball4Breakfast.

"Whack. I've been a Heat fan for over 30 years. This needs to stop. Two seasons as the 10th seed, WTF. Dismantling this team is what's needed. Mediocre is what we have become," wrote @Broker_Mike_.
"@MiamiHEAT do me a favor and get some help. This can't keep going. Y'all want to win? Then find some good players!" pleaded @vthebest0303.
"Pat Riley needs his a** whooped in general," commented @4LPremeium.
Miami played in the Play-In Tournament for the fourth straight time.
It did not help the Heat that Bam Adebayo suffered a back injury in the second quarter and did not return.
