Charlotte Hornets guard LaMelo Ball avoided a suspension for tripping Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo, but was fined $60,000 for the dirty play that resulted in Bam hurting his lower back. Ball addressed the play and Adebayo ahead of his Play-In Tournament game against the Orlando Magic.
Ball discussed the play during the Hornets’ morning shootaround, per WCNC’s Danielle Stein.
“I don’t really have no thoughts right now. I’m worried about this game today,” Ball said. “I tried to apologize and everything, just look out for Bam, mainly, make sure he’s OK. We don’t want nobody hurt in this league ever. As long as he’s good.”
While Ball hasn’t had the chance to speak to Adebayo, he says he attempted to after the game, and still plans to when he’s granted the opportunity.
“Whenever I see him, I’ll try to talk to him,” Ball added. “After the game, I tried to talk to him. I was waiting by his locker room, and everything, talking to his security guard, waiting for him. They said he was in the shower and everything. I mean, it was a tough game. You lose; you don’t really like talking to people. So, I gave him his space pretty much, and he said he’ll get with me. There’s a lot going on.”
When a reporter asked Ball if he’s had any trouble clearing his head about the incident with Heat’s Bam Adebayo, he replied, “It’s never a problem.”
Bill Simmons sounds off on LaMelo Ball after Hornets win
The Ringer’s Bill Simmons called Hornets guard LaMelo Ball out on his approach in the Play-In Tournament win against the Heat. Simmons didn’t hold back on Ball, per The Bill Simmons Show.
“I thought LaMelo just had some horrific moments in this game. Like horrific,” Simmons said. “Moments that make you wonder, is this guy just never going getting it ever? Like, what is up with the decision-making? Then what happens after he throws the ball away to lose the lead on a foul on Tyler Herro, which he commits for three free throws, they come out of a timeout, and he makes an awesome driving layup to win the game.
“He was the player of the game, and the least valuable player in the game, all in the same game.”
The Hornets will face the Magic on Friday for the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference.
