The Broncos had some costly mistakes in the first half of their AFC Championship Game loss to the New England Patriots , including a critical turnover by Jarrett Stidham .
The quarterback, who was thrust into the starting role in place of the injured Bo Nix , fumbled the football on a backwards pass in Denver territory.
Two plays later, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye ran into the end zone to tie the game at 7-7.
“Obviously, I can’t t put our team in a bad position like that,” Stidham told reporters after the game . “I was trying to throw it away to (running back Tyler Badie ). He was in the area and he just got up on me real fast and I was trying to get rid of it. Like I said, I can’t put the ball in a in a position like that. So that was completely on me.”
Stidham thought he had thrown the ball forward on the play.
“Then obviously the replay or whatever said differently,” he said . “So, probably should have just eaten the sack anyway and let Jeremy (Crawshaw) and the punt team punt it down the field and flip the field. But, like I said, I can’t do that.”
It was New England ’s only touchdown in the 10-7 win .
Prior to that, Broncos coach Sean Payton elected to not kick a field goal up 7-0 on 4th-and-1 and keep the offense on the field. The Patriots’ defense got to Stidham and the ball was turned over on downs.
Andy Borregales hit a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter and Christian Gonzalez helped punched the Patriots’ ticket to Super Bowl 60 with an interception of Stidham late in the fourth.
