Jayson Tatum reveals the biggest factor behind his early Achilles tear comeback: "I haven't went 48 hours without seeing Nick"
Jayson Tatum 's recent comeback from an Achilles tendon rupture could make for a compelling case study in sports science. No doubt, his situation is an exception, given that the rehab period for an injury of this nature is usually twelve months or even longer.
However, in Tatum's case, this was achieved in less than ten months, or 298 days, to be precise. The Boston Celtics superstar managed a record-setting recovery time. So much so that many felt he could be rushing his recovery, advising him not to risk his career in the bargain.
Nonetheless, Jayson had self-belief and the full support of his close circle. That said, playing a primary role in his decision to return to the hardwood was Celtics physical therapist and assistant athletic trainer Nick Sang, who became a very close friend of Tatum over the years.
"He's had the biggest role. For the last ten months, I haven't went 48 hours without seeing Nick. He was there, obviously, when I got injured. He's been with me every step of the way. I'm very fortunate to have someone that is as selfless and dedicated as he is."
"Obviously, one of my best friends. That's a bonus. Somebody that I know cares about me as a person and is invested as much as anyone you know," said JT, recalling how Sang pushed him on days he felt his lowest.
Beyond professional ties
Professionals in their respective fields, both Tatum and Sang worked for the Celtics organization. Initially sharing a professional relationship, the two developed a strong friendship over time, including Nick accompanying Jayson as his plus-one to weddings.
A regular visitor at the Tatum residence, Sang would often end up staying over as well. The two stuck with each other through thick and thin, as evidenced by Nick working around the clock to try and make sure Jayson was able to make a comeback before anyone could ever imagine.
"I've seen Nick work countless hours to research and call specialists and dot every I, cross every T, to make sure we were doing the right things and make sure we didn't skip any steps."
"He's been with me every single day since I got injured. He's a big reason why I was able to recover as fast as I did and make it to this point. It was on him. I can't say enough good things about him and I can't thank him enough," said Tatum.
Playing his first game after an Achilles injury, it was an unreal moment for Jayson, who left no stone unturned when it came to returning in the earliest time possible.
Jitters before comeback
Gearing up for his return at the TD Garden in Boston, where the Celtics hosted the Dallas Mavericks , Tatum was in the starting line-up. It took the six-time All-Star some time to shake off the rust as he missed his first six shots. Nevertheless, he recovered from it in no time.
The Celtics had a comfortable win over the Mavs, with Tatum posting an impressive stat line of 15 points, 12 rebounds and 7 assists. JT addressed the media in his first game after Achilles.
"It's been tough, emotionally. A lot of times, I doubted myself. A lot of nights I spent crying. But I just tried to keep showing up every day and charge with my best foot forward. I still got a long way to go, but this was a huge step for me," said the 6'8" forward.
The Celtics, who were already cruising through this season, now find themselves in an even better spot in terms of winning the East after JT's return. No denying, Tatum was fortunate to have a doctor and friend like Sang, who made it his life's mission to help Jayson return sooner.
