The New York Mets have struggled through a disappointing 2026 season so far. New York is last in the National League East, with a 28-35 record. New York Post reporter Jon Heyman is making the case that the club should sell off assets before this season's trade deadline.
"They are in a tough spot… if they do [sell], they will do well," Heyman said, per MLB Network.
The insider feels the team is at a disadvantage this season by being a National League club. There are more teams with winning records this season in the NL, than the AL. Heyman also feels the Mets schedule moving forward in the weeks ahead is quite difficult.
As a result, the insider is releasing a list of possible trade candidates for the team. Heyman lists several Mets pitchers as likely trade candidates. At the top of the list for him is Freddy Peralta .
"He's 4-4….he is a playoff pitcher for just about anybody," Heyman said.
Clay Holmes is also a trade candidate to Heyman. Holmes has a 2.39 ERA on the season , although he has been out with an injury.
The insider is also a believer in the Mets bullpen. Heyman feels New York has several relievers who could entice other clubs at the deadline.
"The Mets, if they do trade, like I said it's a bonanza but it's going to be pretty good for them. They are going to do well," Heyman said.
The Mets have dealt with several injuries this season, including to slugger Juan Soto . New York just hasn't been able to collect the wins as of early June to get in the mix for a postseason berth.
New York plays a game on Saturday against the San Diego Padres . The Mets have won back-to-back games. New York fans hope those wins keep coming.
