Justin Herbert sat out Week 18 to nurse a broken left hand.
The Chargers quarterback had surgery on the non-throwing hand on Dec. 1 and played through it up until last weekend, when the Chargers opted to rest him with an eye toward Wild Card weekend.
Ahead of Sunday’s game against the Patriots , Herbert offered an update on the hand injury a week and a half removed from his last game action.
“Continues to get better,” Herbert said. “Getting all the swelling out. Getting better mobility of it, better strength. Getting back to the way it was before. So we’re always making strides forward. Doing everything I can in the treatment room, out on the field. So I thought it was good to have that week.
“Not taking hits on it last week was probably pretty helpful for it. Limited the swelling. Just getting back to making sure that you’ve got full strength being able to hold on to a football.”
The quarterback was listed as a full participant at Wednesday’s practice and there was a new step forward for him.
Herbert said this was the first time he’d taken snaps under center early in the week since suffering the injury in November. Prior to Wednesday, he had only been taking a few under-center snaps on the weekend before games to limit the impact on his left hand.
