CLEVELAND — Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson did not want to praise his team for scoring at will in a 136-131 win over the Orlando Magic on March 24 at Rocket Arena .

Atkinson had no desire to bask in the Cavs shooting 60.5% from the field, including 40% from 3-point range.

And Atkinson was not the least bit interested in celebrating the 68 combined points of starting Cavs guards Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.

With 10 games left in the regular season, Atkinson's primary objective is to motivate the Cavs to get their act together on defense. He knows their playoff lives will depend on it. Ready or not, the postseason will begin April 18. The Cavs certainly don't appear to be ready on one end of the floor.

Amid a four-game winning streak, the Cavs (45-27, fourth in the Eastern Conference) have often demonstrated the defensive resistance of tissue paper. Atkinson would not have been doing his job if he didn't sound the alarm. Well, he's ringing the bells behind closed doors and in public. It's an obvious sign he considers the situation dire for a team in NBA Finals-or-bust mode.

The first question Atkinson fielded during his postgame news conference was about Mitchell and Harden working in unison. Mitchell scored a game-high 42 points and Harden added 26 points against the Magic (38-34, eighth in the East). But ... nope. Atkinson wasn't having it. He took the exit ramp to the town of dreadful defense and spent his seven-minute news conference parked there.

"I just told the team in the locker room if we're going to play defense like this, we're going to have a short playoff stint," Atkinson said. "So, right now, we have a mentality that we're just going to outscore people. And we all know when it comes to playoff time, it's not going to be that easy offensively. We're not always going to shoot like we're scoring now. So if we're giving up 132 points, 128, I don't know, seems like every game, we're not going anywhere."

Atkinson said the problems cannot be narrowed down to one area. He used the word "everything" to describe what's wrong with the defense. The Cavs aren't pressuring the ball well enough, and they're not physical enough, either. The requisite intensity just isn't there, at least not on a consistent basis.

"It's the compete level, and then along with the compete level, there's an IQ level and understanding of the game," Atkinson added. "So if you're slipping in both areas, you give up 132 points. And the last part of that is communication, right? So if your compete level is not there defensively, you're missing closeouts, or not understanding personnel, that's the IQ part, right? And then they're sliding in for offensive rebounds all the time. So we've got to decide. We've got two weeks to figure it out. And that's a challenge for this group. But right now, we just think we can outscore people."

Cavs history: Cavaliers cherish 'Miracle of Richfield' as 50th anniversary arrives

The Cavs rank sixth in offensive rating (118) but 14th in defensive rating (113.7) among the NBA's 30 teams.

"You've got to be top 10, right? Offense, defense," Atkinson said. "It gives you the best chance, and we're not. [When] we do get a stop or take them to the end of the shot clock, someone sneaks in and gets a rebound."

Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson reacts during a game at the Pelicans, March 21, 2026.

Last year, in Atkinson's first season at the helm of the Cavs, Cleveland finished the regular season first in offensive rating (121) and eighth in defensive rating (111.8). The Cavs proceeded to sweep the Miami Heat 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs and then wither in the Eastern Conference semifinals, losing 4-1 in a best-of-seven series against the Indiana Pacers .

The Cavs traded point guard Darius Garland for Harden in February with the goal of getting over the hump in the playoffs and making a run to the Finals. The plan will be sabotaged unless the defense improves.

"We're very capable [on defense]," Atkinson said. "I think that's where the frustration is. And our leaders got to take ownership of getting that locker room to take ownership of defending better. It really starts there."

Cavs news: Cavaliers score and recap vs. Orlando Magic. Game highlights, analysis and stats

Atkinson sees red flags all over the defensive end of the court. He doesn't view scheme or injuries as the culprits, though. Focus can be fickle for NBA teams in March, yet a mature roster should not succumb to forming poor habits with the postseason on the horizon. Cleveland's defense has been inexcusable.

"We've been talking about it for, I don't know, two weeks now, right?" Atkinson said. "So there's a level of concern with two weeks, and I don't want to hear that [we don't have center] Jarrett Allen [because he has missed the last nine games with a knee injury]. The Defensive Player of the Year [ Evan Mobley is on our team]. We've got Keon Ellis . We've got defenders. It's not a personnel thing. I don't want to take anything away from the Magic, right? They played really well, but, really, we've got to be better."

The Magic compiled more assists (27-24), rebounds (39-33), offensive rebounds (13-6) and second-chance points (23-7) than the Cavs. Orlando shot 48.8% from the field, including 35.9% on 3-pointers. Forward Paolo Banchero produced 36 points, leading the way for a team with six players who scored in double figures despite missing Franz Wagner , Jalen Suggs and Anthony Black .

Cavaliers guard James Harden shoots against the 76ers, March 9, 2026. — Cavaliers guard James Harden shoots against the Philadelphia 76ers during the second half, March 9, 2026, in Cleveland.

Atkinson explained he used Mitchell, Harden, Mobley, small forward Max Strus and guard Sam Merrill to end the game because "we couldn't get stops, so might as well put the guys [in the game who] can put in the hole."

Atkinson is right to call out his players. Now his rotations need to reflect the challenge he has issued. Otherwise, he won't be holding anyone accountable.

"Who's going to be a high-level defensive player in the playoffs? That's what gets you in the rotation," Atkinson said.

Mitchell, Mobley and Strus expressed confidence the Cavs can turn it on defensively in time for the playoffs. Atkinson is obviously not convinced it's a given. The coach's stern warning revealed how much the defense is disturbing him.

"It's the truth," Strus said of Atkinson's criticism. "I'm sure the truth hurts sometimes, but it's needed. And we all want to be coached. We all want to be better, and we all want to win. We know [Atkinson] wants the same thing. So no hard feelings. It's the truth. We do need to be better on that end and understand the importance of it. So we're appreciative of him and glad he said it."

However, no quotes will prove Atkinson's message is being taken as seriously as it should be by his players. Their performances will tell everyone whether they have bought in.
