Lip reader breaks down heated Steve Kerr-Draymond Green exchange: "If you don't want me to talk to you, then go home"
It may be the most wonderful time of the year, but not in Golden State . With the Warriors sitting eighth in the Western Conference standings at 15-15, frustration is at an all-time high and came to a boil in their previous game against the Orlando Magic .
Although they won that contest, the central talking point was the heated argument between Steve Kerr and Draymond Green during a third-quarter timeout. The verbal exchange was so fierce that Green elected to leave the team and head to the locker room to de-escalate the brewing situation.
The two didn't reveal what was said, but noted lip reader Legendz analyzed their exchange.
A lack of focus
The Warriors were already on edge during that game against the Magic, especially when they fell behind by five early in the third. With Green more focused on arguing with the referees than leading the team, Kerr called a timeout to steer the team in the right direction and call him out for his lack of focus.
Unfortunately, Green wasn't having any of that, and according to Legendz, cursed Kerr out in front of the entire team.
"F—k you," Green told Kerr.
Kerr, though, was not in a coddling mood and fired right back, supposedly saying , " If you don’t want me to talk to you, then go home. "
Sensing things were about to go sideways, young wingman Moses Moody tried to intervene, saying, "Come on, man. Come on, Dray."
Kerr tried one last time to keep Green in the game and asked him, "How am I supposed to coach you, Dray?"
However, Gree felt that he and Kerr had gone far enough that he thought the best thing to do was leave the huddle and head to the locker room, where he would stay until the fourth quarter. He returned to the bench wearing street clothes.
A dismal season so far for Draymond
This incident was another setback in a tough season for Green. His defense remains strong, but his offense has faltered, shooting just 40.9 percent overall and 32.7 percent from three. He has more turnovers (75) than field goals (72).
Despite these subpar numbers, Kerr and the Warriors aren't giving up on the 35-year-old as they still believe he has a significant part to play in their run this season. Kerr revealed after their practice on Wednesday that he and Green had already apologized to one another and spoken to the team about the incident.
Kerr emphasized how crucial Green is to the Warriors' cause and lamented how he let his emotions get the best of him in that moment.
"There's a long history of that here because we understand each other and I understand his power. There are four banners out there, and obviously a lot of people played important roles in that, but I've said this before and I truly believe it: I don't think we have any without him," the Warriors coach said .
"That's how much he impacts winning. So his ability to channel that passion, that emotion, that raw rage that he has is a key component to what makes us successful. And what I said about the other night, I didn't channel my own raw emotion and rage, of which there is plenty," he added.
It remains to be seen if the olive branch that Kerr and Green have extended to one another will impact the team moving forward. Warriors' fans, though, won't have to wait long as the team hosts the Dallas Mavericks on Christmas Day.
