The Miami Dolphins joined the long list of teams that will need a new coach for the 2026 season.
The Dolphins fired Mike McDaniel on Thursday, the team announced Thursday morning.
“After careful evaluation and extensive discussions since the season ended, I have made the decision that our organization is in need of comprehensive change,” Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said in a statement. “I informed Mike McDaniel this morning that he has been relieved of his duties as head coach. I love Mike and want to thank him for his hard work, commitment, and the energy he brought to our organization. Mike is an incredibly creative football mind whose passion for the game and his players was evident every day. I wish him and his family the best moving forward.”
McDaniel was hired by Miami in February 2022. He went 35-33 over his four seasons and made two playoff appearances. The Dolphins lost both of those games.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins have not contacted John Harbaugh, who was fired by the Baltimore Ravens earlier this week.
Harbaugh, however, is expected to emerge as a “key candidate” for Miami, per NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport .
With McDaniel’s firing, 25% of NFL teams will need a new coach. The Atlanta Falcons , Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals are also among the teams in need of a new coach.
