The Seattle Mariners completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a historic 1-0 win on Thursday night at T-Mobile Park, improving to 45-43 and remaining tied with the Texas Rangers for first place in the American League West.
The win was unlike any other in franchise history. It's the first time Seattle has won a 1-0 game on a bases-loaded walk . Across Major League Baseball, it was just the 39th time in the last 50 years that a team has won 1-0 in that fashion and only the second occurrence this season.
Bryce Miller earned the win after throwing seven scoreless innings. The right-hander struck out eight, walked none and surrendered only two hits. He carried a no-hitter into the seventh before Nolan Schanuel broke it up with a bloop single. Denzer Guzman followed with another single, but Miller retired the next three hitters to finish his outing. It was his fourth consecutive start without issuing a walk and his eighth appearance in nine starts this season allowing two earned runs or fewer. Miller improved to 4-2.
The Mariners' only run came in the sixth inning. JP Crawford, appearing in his 1,000th career game, opened the frame with Seattle's first hit, a double. Dominic Canzone and Randy Arozarena drew walks to load the bases before Josh Naylor struck out. Cal Raleigh then battled back from an 0-2 count and worked a nine-pitch walk against Walbert Urena, forcing home Crawford with the game's lone run.
Eduard Bazardo protected the lead with a perfect eighth inning, striking out two. Andres Munoz recorded his 16th save in 21 chances despite allowing a leadoff walk and two singles in the ninth. Zach Neto was erased on a pickoff play after his walk, and Munoz stranded two runners by inducing a game-ending groundout from Wade Meckler .
The Mariners also dealt with injuries as Julio Rodriguez exited after being struck in the back of the helmet by a throw while running the bases, while Victor Robles later left after being hit on the right wrist by a pitch.
