Mavericks' Trade Stance on Former NBA All-Star Revealed
D'Angelo Russell came to the Dallas Mavericks during the 2025 offseason, with both sides having high hopes about their partnership. He is supposed to be their main point guard as Kyrie Irving recovers from his knee injury.
Fast forward to February 2026, the initial feelings dissipated and the team is now looking to trade him away. NBA insider Marc Stein of The Stein Line said that the 2019 All-Star is one of the three players Mavs decided to move on from.
"I'm told that Dallas does not want to trade Naji Marshall or Christie — who arrived in Dallas alongside Davis — while continuing to explore potential moves involving Daniel Gafford , Klay Thompson and D'Angelo Russell," Stein wrote.
Russell has played only 26 games so far, suiting up just once in the month of January. He is averaging 10.2 points per game. The Mavs signed him in July last year for a two-year contract worth $13 million.
The Mavs front office was hoping to pair him with Anthony Davis , his former teammate with the Los Angeles Lakers . Unfortunately, the duo barely see action, no thanks to various injuries.
Russell, who was an All-Star with the Brooklyn Nets back in 2019, is not exactly unwanted. Among the teams showing interest on the 29-year-old point guard are the Milwaukee Bucks , per HoopsHype insider Michael Scott.
Stein confirmed this report, although he emphasized that the Bucks will only push through with the deal if Russell chose to decline his $6 million player option for next season.
