The New York Mets and catcher Luis Torrens are reportedly in agreement on a two-year contract extension, per MLB insider Jon Heyman. The deal is worth $11.5 million for two years. Torrens, who was a National League Gold Glove Award finalist in 2025, has only appeared in 13 games this year. Nevertheless, has made a significant impact behind the plate despite the Mets’ overall struggles .

Torrens is not known for his offensive impact. So far in 2026, he is hitting just .200/.200/.267 across 31 plate appearances. He is a tremendous defensive catcher, however.

Francisco Alvarez is the Mets’ starting catcher. Alvarez is a better offensive player . New York understands that the backup catcher position is of the utmost importance, though. They clearly value everything that Torrens offers to the ball club. The Mets are hopeful that he will be able to make an impact for years to come.

The Mets earned a 4-3 victory against the Los Angeles Angels on the road on Friday night. They are still just 11-21 overall, however. New York is in last place in the National League East standings.

It is only early May and there is realistically time for the ball club to turn the season around, but the Mets have certainly struggled up to this point in the season.

The Mets will attempt to build off their Friday victory moving forward. They will play the Angels in Anaheim once again on Saturday night. First pitch for the Mets and Angels clash is scheduled 9:38 PM EST in what should be a competitive contest.
