When Pete Alonso signed with the Baltimore Orioles , he knew that it meant that he would be returning to New York at least three times, maybe four times a season. Alonso had many great years with the New York Mets , but playing at Yankee Stadium for the first time as an Oriole should still give him some familiarity. The scenes in New York City are unlike any other place in the world.
Ahead of the Orioles- Yankees contest on Friday night, Alonso spoke about what it means to return to NY as a visitor.
“My first taste of professional baseball was playing for the Cyclones and then kind of working my way up from there. A lot of memories here for my family and I.”
“The last time we were here, I just remember going to Mount Sinai with my wife and coming out as a family of three. For me, it’s special because you look down memory lane. There’s a lot of great baseball memories but also a lot of great personal memories, too.”
Alonso is off to a rough start in 2026, but he is starting to slowly improve each week. The slugger is hitting .198 on the season, but we know that is going to rise by midseason. Alonso adds 13 RBIs, seven doubles, 17 walks, and a .668 OPS. His .382 SLG is a career low by far. Alonso is averaging a home run every 29 at-bats, which is by far the highest in his career. His previous high was 17.9 in 2024.
Playing in New York could give him an extra boost. A little familiarity can go a long way in this sport.
