As it’s been a dreadful start for the New York Mets , there has been speculation on the job security of manager Carlos Mendoza, especially after the firings of Alex Cora and Rob Thomson from the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies , respectively. With the Mets coming off a sweep loss to the Colorado Rockies, the manager gets real about his job status.
According to Joe Pantorno, Mendoza said Tuesday that he has had no conversations with executive David Stearns regarding his role.
“Not about that. Having conversations with David [Stearns] like we normally would, like he was just in my office, just going over the day,” Mendoza said, via SNY Mets.
With teams like the Red Sox and the Phillies underachieving to start the season, the franchises took the right course of action by firing the managers in Cora and Thomson. It’s only natural that fans wonder if New York could be next on the list with Mendoza, with the team at a 9-19 record.
Mets’ Carlos Mendoza speaks on Alex Cora, Rob Thomson firings
Mendoza is aware of the firings around the league with Cora and Thomson, which is news he’s sad to see, especially since he said the latter is a mentor of his. He would also express how he is “not going to run away from it” in regard to himself.
“It’s reality. It sucks. What happened to those two guys, guys that I consider one of the best at what they do,” Mendoza said, per SNY Mets. “And you hate to see it happen, but you understand that it’s the business, and when you don’t see the results, it happens.”
“I’m aware of it. Not going to run away from it,” Mendoza continued. “But the one thing I can do is just continue to show up here and get the best out of my players….But obviously I understand this, the whole situation.”
It remains to be seen what Mendoza’s job security looks like, as the focus for him is turning around New York ahead of a three-game series against the Washington Nationals , starting Tuesday.
