The New York Mets will be looking to split their four-game series against the Washington Nationals on Thursday. Manager Carlos Mendoza has now made a firm decision on New York 's starting pitching assignment.
Left-hander David Peterson will be on the mound Thursday, via Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. He will be a traditional starter and won't be following an opener.
Peterson has struggled mightily in 2026, posting a 5.40 ERA and a 46/17 K/BB ratio over his 10 appearances thus far. It's important to note that of those 10 outings, only five of them have been starts. The Mets opted to move the left-hander to the bullpen for a spell and use an opener in front of him due to his struggles.
That won't be the case on Thursday. Mendoza has decided it's worth the dice roll to give him another opportunity beginning in the first inning. Peterson must now prove he can handle the role, or New York will be forced to move him down the pitching pecking order once again.
The Mets still have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about Peterson's start. He was named an All-Star in 2025 after posting a 4.22 ERA and a 150/65 K/BB ratio. Furthermore, he held a 2.90 ERA and a 101/46 K/BB ratio.
At 21-28, New York is still trying to turn their season around. While early in the year, they want to win as many NL East matchups as possible. That includes on Thursday night, against a Nationals team that sits at a surprising 25-25. All eyes will now be on Peterson who will look to jumpstart his 2026 season.
