The New York Mets are entering their Sunday matchup against the Chicago Cubs on a 10-game losing streak . Now, manager Carlos Mendoza has decided to make a change to the pitching rotation.
David Peterson has been scratched , and now Tobias Myers will be starting in his place, via Will Sammon and Tim Britton of The Athletic. Still, Peterson is taking a team-first approach despite his bump from the rotation, via Mike Puma of the New York Post.
“I don’t think it matters what my reaction is,” Peterson said. “It matters what the best decision for the team is. We’re trying to do everything we can to win games.”
Peterson will still be available out of the bullpen on Sunday. Myers hasn’t pitched more than three innings in any of his six outings this season, meaning it’s likely the original start will hear his name called. Still, Mendoza’s decision will send a message to Peterson, and he hopes it helps end New York’s lengthy losing streak.
The right-hander has struggled mightily throughout the 2026 campaign. Over four starts, Peterson holds a 6.41 ERA and a 21/10 K/BB ratio. He has allowed at least four earned runs in his last three outings and walked four last time he was out against the Los Angeles Dodgers .
Peterson is coming off of an All-Star campaign, so Mendoza and the Mets know how valuable he could be. But New York is desperate for wins right now. If that means moving Peterson to the bullpen amid his struggles, Mendoza will do it.
