Mets have to look to 1951 Giants for hope after losing 10th consecutive game appeared first on ClutchPoints . Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here .
The saying goes you can't win a pennant in April, but you can lose it. The New York Mets and their fans desperately hope they are not the living embodiment of that adage. Following Saturday's 4-2 loss versus the Chicago Cubs , they have now dropped 10 straight games and own a National League-worst 7-14 record. While there is a ton of baseball still to be played, history is not on this team's side .
"Four teams in MLB history have lost 10 or more games in a row and made the playoffs," ESPN's Jeff Passan posted on X, adding to fans' severe anxiety. "The last was the Guardians in 2025. Only one of those teams had a skid in April and still made the postseason: the 1951 Giants, who lost 11 consecutive.."
The example that Passan is citing just so happens to be one of the most storied comebacks in MLB history. Despite losing to the New York York Yankees in the World Series, that fabled New York Giants squad overcame a 12-and-a-half-game deficit in August and forced a one-game playoff against the Brooklyn Dodgers. They defeated their detested foe and claimed the NL pennant, courtesy of Bobby Thomson's legendary "Shot Heard Round the World."
Perhaps Carlos Mendoza 's squad can capture its own Big-Apple magic this October. Maybe longtime radio voice Howie Rose will blast the airwaves with the "Mets win the pennant, the Mets win the pennant!" This team does not look like a winner, but neither did those scrappy Giants. The improbable can happen in this sport. This franchise knows that better than anyone, as both of its World Series victories came under stunning or even miraculous circumstances.
New York cannot just bank on hope and history, however. The players must execute in the batter's box, on the mound and in the field.
The Mets recorded more hits than the Cubs on Saturday but were still unable to get the job done. They have scored just nine runs in their last six games and rank in the bottom-three in OPS, slugging and on-base percentage. Although Juan Soto's absence is obviously a big factor in these colossal offensive struggles. New York should be far more productive.
If Passan's Giants tidbit is to be regarded as gospel, then the Mets have little time to ignite. They will try to salvage this series and end their dreadful losing streak on Sunday afternoon.
