It has been a disaster of a season for the New York Mets . At 10-20, the Mets are in last place in the NL East. As two managers, Alex Cora and Rob Thomson, have been fired, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza might be next .
The fact that Mendoza is on the hot seat has led fans to speculate who could replace him , but the hope for David Wright saving the organization may not come to fruition, as Chad Jennings of The Athletic explored.
“Wait, is David Wright a possibility? I asked Mets beat writer Tim Britton,” Jennings wrote in response to the suggestion of Wright for the Mets.
“Wright dabbled in being a special assistant shortly after he retired,” Britton said, “but ever since, he’s been very content spending time with his family in California. He hasn’t even wanted the special assistant grind, let alone the manager one.”
It seems like David Wright managing the Mets is not going to be an option. Wright’s number five is retired by the Mets, and he is part of the Mets Hall of Fame. The former third baseman was selected by the Mets in the 2001 MLB Draft and would break into the majors in 2004 with the club.
He would spend his entire career with the team, winning Rookie of the Year, being a seven-time All-Star, a two-time Gold Glove Winner, and a two-time Silver Slugger. He is also the all-time franchise leader in hits, RBIs, total bases, All-Star Game appearances, and extra-base hits. Since retiring after the 2018 season, Wright has not been heavily involved in baseball.
While the thought of Wright wearing his Mets jersey once again, this time as a manager, seems like a dream, it does not seem like it is the dream for Wright.
