The Los Angeles Chargers saw their Super Bowl hopes crash and burn in 2025 in large part due to struggles on the offensive side of the ball, both with play-calling and deficiencies on the offensive line. The Chargers made moves to address both of those things this offseason, including the blockbuster hire of Mike McDaniel as the team's new offensive coordinator.
The pairing of McDaniel and star quarterback Justin Herbert has been one of the more highly-anticipated new partnerships in the NFL this offseason. McDaniel has never worked with a quarterback with the talent of Herbert, and Herbert has never worked with an offensive mind like McDaniel.
On Tuesday, Herbert talked about a presentation that McDaniel made for him that showed just how committed he is to making this pair work, via Kris Rhim of ESPN.
" Justin Herbert said Mike McDaniel put together a presentation featuring a few hundred plays from Herbert's career and McDaniel's previous offenses, showing how certain concepts could have been executed differently," Rhim reported on X, formerly Twitter.
"It was a well-put-together presentation that I really saw the vision, and it meant a lot to me," Herbert said, per Rhim.
McDaniel showed what he can do as an offensive coordinator back in the 2023 season, when the Dolphins finished with the second-best scoring offense in the NFL and the top-ranked total offense. He did that with Tua Tagovailoa at quarterback, who doesn't have nearly the physical tools or the track record of Herbert .
That should excite Chargers fans, who have watched their star quarterback carry a pretty poor situation on that side of the ball for a number of years now. While Los Angeles is still a bit lacking at wide receiver and on the offensive line, but the addition of McDaniel should make it an immediately-improved offense.
The former Dolphins head coach is also one of the best run-game designers in football, so the Chargers should see a big lift there. That will make Herbert's life much easier and allow him to tear it up through the air again in 2026.
