The Patriots have had success against the Chargers in the playoffs in the past. But Mike Vrabel knows it will be a challenge for his team when it host Los Angeles on Sunday night for the AFC Wild Card game .
“This is a big, physical football team. Big linemen. They have a big defensive lineman who plays fullback. The defense plays a very good style of football, make it hard on you, bunch of different mixed quarters coverages,” the Patriots coach said during his weekly appearance on WEEI . “The quarterback is as good any anybody, can scramble, is tough, can make the throws. Good, big receivers. It will be a big challenge to get going on these guys and learn who they are and try to put a plan together.”
The Patriots offense has been incredibly productive this season, but it will be tested against a Chargers defense that ranked ninth in the NFL in points allowed this season.
The Chargers will be rested going into wild card weekend. With the top seed out of reach going into Week 18 against the Denver Broncos , they elected to rest their starters.
The two teams did not meet in the regular season, so Vrabel knows there’s some unfamiliarity with their next opponent.
“We’ll have to get to know these guys,” he said . “It’s a team that we don’t know, one we’re not familiar with.”
With a Sunday night game , the Patriots will have a full week of practice and won’t need to change anything around. They’ll use the week to “get to know” the Chargers and prepare for their first playoff game since 2021.
