FOXBOROUGH - Mike Vrabel has previously gone to bat for Drake Maye being the NFL MVP.
On Monday, during his daily media briefing, the Patriots coach went into greater depth discussing the case for Maye to win the award over co-favorite Matthew Stafford.
Vrabel explained exactly why, in his mind, Maye was the most deserving for the award.
“He’s extremely accurate. He’s made the most of every passing opportunity, creating a lot of X’ plays,” Vrabel began, alluding to explosive plays. “And to create ‘X’ plays, on 30 percent scheme, it’s about 70 percent the players make a play, and part of that is the quarterback putting it in a great location for run after catch.”
With his 72.0% overall completion percentage, Maye became the first quarterback in NFL history to complete at least 71% of his passes and average 8.9 yards per attempt.
Vrabel cited that, as well as Maye’s ability to run with the football.
“I think you continue to see that,” Vrabel said, “and his ability to extend and use his legs to gain first downs, critical first downs, his ability to score when we’ve asked him to score and run it in.”
Vrabel said Maye has been part and parcel of the team’s first-place finish in the division, its 14-3 mark, and its perfect 8-0 road record. He’s a significant reason the Patriots will be hosting their first playoff game in six years with the LA Chargers headed east for a Sunday night showdown.
“He’s been everything we’ve asked, and he continues to get better,” Vrabel said. “He’s not satisfied. I know our success and where we are right now today has a lot to do with Drake Maye .”
