FOXBOROUGH – Milton Williams has been so bored that he admitted to watching every game he played this season at least three different times since suffering his ankle injury.
The Patriots defensive tackle also admitted that he realized he loves football “more than originally thought” with how much he missed playing the game.
Despite eagerly wanting to return, Williams still wasn’t able to play last week when the Patriots blew out the New York Jets . On Wednesday, the veteran said he hopes to be back in the team’s regular-season finale, but ultimately, that’s up to his ankle.
Last week, when he returned to practice, Williams said it didn’t hold up well enough for him to play.
“I didn’t have as much confidence as I do this week,” Williams said. “Last week was still a little shaky on just trusting it. Feeling better this week. I’ll see if we’re able to go on Sunday.”
After missing the previous four games with a high-ankle sprain, Williams returned to practice last week for the first time in five weeks. The Patriots could certainly use him with Khyiris Tonga out with a football injury. The team also placed defensive tackle Joshua Farmer on the injured reserve.
In 11 games, Williams was a force for the Patriots’ defensive line. The 26-year-old made 3.5 sacks to go with eight quarterback hits. The team’s highest-paid player, Williams, looked worth the money this fall.
When he suffered the ankle injury against the New York Jets, Williams was devastated and said it was difficult to watch the Patriots play from afar.
“Probably learned that I love football more than I originally thought. It’s been hard watching,” Williams said. “I’ve watched all my games from this season back like three times. Just bored. Got nothing to do. Like, ‘Man, I got to get back to this player that I was when we started the season.’ That’s been my mindset getting back, getting back healthy and just trying to come back and help this team win games.”
Williams was back at practice on Wednesday. He wouldn’t say if he’d play this weekend, but admitted he’s feeling good.
“We’ll see,” Williams said. “I’m feeling better than last week, I’ll say that, but we’ll see.”
