As fans have paid attention to what the MLB will do when it comes to a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and how the salary cap and free agency will change, there is another component that directly impacts viewers of the sport. With MLB commissioner Rob Manfred 's new proposal submitted, it includes a part that could change the way blackouts impact fans when watching the game.
Besides the MLB "proposing a salary cap of $245.3 million and a floor of $171.2 million with 50-50 split of revenues" in 2027, according to The Athletic, another change is "all local-media revenues in the sport would newly become central revenue." As that aspect is one that Manfred "has sought" to implement, which could attack the local TV blackouts that fans deal with.
The MLB speaks about addressing "local TV blackouts"
Talking about the CBA proposal by the MLB, a statement would be released by league spokesperson Glen Caplin on Thursday, which addresses not only the salary cap with all teams, but also the local TV revenue being centralized. In fact, Caplin would mention how the sharing of media revenue would "address another top fan concern of local TV blackouts."
"The biggest issue we need to solve next to continue to grow the game off the field is fixing the payroll disparity unseen in any other major U.S. sport," Caplin said. "Ultimately, the game is about hope and competition, and too many fans in too many markets have too little hope their team has a fair chance to win. Fans overwhelmingly support a salary cap and floor like in the other leagues because they don't believe a $446 million spending gap from top to bottom is a fair fight."
"Our salary cap and floor proposal levels the playing field while sharing baseball revenue with the players 50-50 as we grow the game together," Caplin continued. "Further, by sharing media revenue equally as part of our proposal, we can address another top fan concern of local TV blackouts.'
It remains to be seen what happens with a CBA that's approved, as the MLBPA has to now respond to Thursday's proposal.
