Minnesota Twins catcher Ryan Jeffers has been linked to the New York Yankees amid the Yankees catchers' offensive woes. However, Jeffers is currently recovering from a hamate bone fracture. The Yankees could benefit from acquiring Jeffers — if he is available. The good news is that Jeffers is trending toward returning soon.
" Ryan Jeffers is starting a rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul. He'll be in the Saints' lineup at designated hitter tonight, about six weeks after surgery on a fractured left hamate bone," Aaron Gleeman reported on Friday .
Assuming no setbacks occur, Jeffers could return fairly soon. Updates on his injury status will continue to be monitored and provided as they are made available.
The Yankees need an offensive boost at the catcher position. Of course, their current catchers have chemistry with the pitching staff which is important. Nevertheless, adding a hitter like Jeffers is something they may consider.
The 29-year-old has only appeared in 37 games this season, but he is hitting .295/.408/.541 to go along with seven home runs. He holds a career OPS of .755, which is respectable for a catcher.
The other element of the situation to consider is that the Twins are not guaranteed to sell before the trade deadline. Minnesota is only four games behind the Cleveland Guardians and Chicago White Sox for first place in the American League Central standings. The next couple of weeks will likely determine the Twins' trade deadline plans.
There are other catching options for the Yankees to consider if they decide to pursue a player at the position, but Jeffers would certainly be a good fit.
