When fans talk about the classic NBA Play-In Tournament battle contested between the Charlotte Hornets and Miami Heat , they will rhapsodize about LaMelo Ball making a game-winning layup in overtime after a near collapse, they will lambaste that same player for seemingly tripping Bam Adebayo in the first half, they will marvel at Coby White 's clutch 3-pointer near the end of regulation and they will credit the Heat for the guts they displayed in the Spectrum Center. But before these conversations conclude, Amazon Prime Video will inevitably be mentioned.
And not in a positive way. The streaming giant nearly ruined a wild ending to what was an all-time great Play-In game, as the screen displayed a technical difficulties message with less than 30 seconds remaining. Miami overcame a five-point deficit and seized a one-point lead with 8.7 seconds left in OT, before Ball sent shock waves through the home crowd. But the paying public almost missed it.
Amid gripes about local networks losing the right to broadcast the opening round of the playoffs, which has long been a tradition, Amazon inexcusably stumbled during a thrilling standalone contest. Fans were understandably upset.
"This Amazon NBA experience is the {worst} thing ever," @BrettJohnson opined on X . "If you want to step up to basketball on prime, you can never – ever – go lights out in the last 25 seconds of overtime in a post season game," @CarolinaBlueCru posted . "As a decade plus prime subscriber, you rock at shipping packages. Do better with live TV."
"Amazon prime should have their playoff games revoked," @Nonagonb741 declared . "Dropped the ball big time tonight. Amateur hour." Money unsurprisingly emerged as a topic in this vent session. "Billions upon billions upon billions of dollars and clowns show," @mattcraine remarked . "Amazon can't figure out how to show the end of overtime NBA games. What a joke. Where's my refund?"
Unfortunately, Amazon did not have much time to learn from its mistakes. A Play-In Tournament clash between the Phoenix Suns and Portland Trail Blazers began airing immediately after the Hornets-Heat thriller ended. Hopefully, this will not be an issue when the actual playoffs start on Saturday.
