The Baltimore Orioles are hoping to receive a pitching boost against the New York Yankees . According to Jake Rill of MLB.com, the O's are promoting their No. 3 overall prospect and No. 2 pitching prospect Trey Gibson and he will make his MLB debut on Sunday. The decision comes after the Orioles announced multiple other roster moves .
Gibson has displayed potential in the minor leagues. He has an ERA of 4.01 at the Triple-A level this season.
The right-handed hurler throws a good fastball, but his slider is perhaps his best pitch. He is still developing overall command of his pitches, but the potential is unquestionably present for the 23-year-old.
Gibson's MLB debut will be a challenge, however. He will begin his big league career against the Yankees in New York . Pitching is never easy at Yankee Stadium for opponents regardless of how well the Yankees are playing. New York happens to be leading the American League East this year, though, so the outing will be especially challenging.
With that being said, the Orioles would not have promoted Gibson if they did not think he was ready for the challenge. The Orioles are dealing with multiple injury concerns in the starting rotation, but they could have promoted another pitcher if Gibson was not ready. They believe in him, though, and he will get the start on Sunday.
At the moment, the O's are focused on their game on Saturday afternoon against the Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 PM EST in New York.
