FOXBOROUGH — With an AFC East crown on the line, Sunday's loss to Buffalo was a double whammy for the Patriots .
New England dropped the game, 35-31 , and now can't clinch the division until Week 17 at the earliest. That means even with a win next Sunday at Baltimore and a Bills loss to the Browns, the AFC East will still be hanging in the balance.
The Patriots now sit 11-3 and Buffalo is in second at 10-4.
With a win over the Bills at Gillette Stadium, the Patriots would have owned the first tiebreaker — head-to-head record — but the season series is split 1-1. The second tiebreaker is divisional record, which hasn't been determined yet. However, New England has an edge there, as Buffalo lost to Miami and sits 3-2 while the Patriots are 3-1.
Drake Maye was disappointed with Sunday's missed opportunity to simplify things, but said he's focused on moving forward.
"Don't let it beat you twice," Maye said. "Move on to the next week and learn from it and take what we can. And know that we've got some football ahead of us that's important, still very important. And don't just hang our hat and keep your head up and know that we had a chance and we're there, just they made more plays and credit to them."
Here are each team's final three games:
New England: at Baltimore, at New York Jets , vs. Dolphins
Buffalo: at Cleveland , vs. Philadelphia , vs. New York Jets
