FOXBOROUGH - Mike Vrabel has a history with Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James .
During his media session Wednesday, the Patriots coach told a funny story about James being on his Pro Bowl team the one year Vrabel coached it in 2022.
Vrabel recalled James asking permission to miss a day during the week.
“I had the luxury to coach a Pro Bowl, and he was on that team. He’s just an unbelievable person. I remember his mom was getting married,” Vrabel said of James. “He communicated and reached out, ‘Hey, I’m gonna miss (a day). And I’m like, ‘Buddy, there are no rules to the Pro Bowl.’ So just remembering that about him, I aways have a lot of respect for him as a player, and as a person.”
James is a 5-time Pro Bowl player and two-time All-Pro. Vrabel respects his game and ability to be a disruptive player on defense.
“He’s got really good instincts with blitzes, whether to inside or outside. I think he has a passion and love for football ... he’s a good tackler. He has the versatility to play close to the line of scrimmage, or in the deeper part of the field.”
The Patriots will see James and the rest of the Chargers defense Sunday night for their Wildcard round matchup.
