The Philadelphia Phillies are off to an awful start to the 2026 campaign. After a 9-19 start to the season, the Phillies fired Rob Thomson . The Phillies got a win in the first game of the Don Mattingly era, but are still in fourth in the NL East.
With the bad start to the season, Phillies president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski , knows more may need to be done, and trade activity could start early , according to Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
“I’ve had trade conversations earlier than I ever have . . . Other clubs haven’t been doing very well, either. Clubs have called around,” Dombrowski said.
He did not identify the other team that would be interested in making early moves, but there are multiple teams that are not reaching expectations. The Toronto Blue Jays are below .500 and currently 6.5 games out of first in the AL East. Meanwhile, the Houston Astros have been the subject of rumors , as they are 11-19 and 4.5 games out of first in the AL West. In the National League, the New York Mets are also struggling, but it would be surprising for the Phillies to trade with an in-division rival.
While the Phillies are well behind in the playoff race, they still have plenty of time to make moves to improve. The MLB trade deadline is not until August 3, and the Phillies are just 29 games into the regular season. With over 120 games left to go, the Phillies still have a chance to make the comeback, but Dombrowski may be feeling urgency now.
