The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly placing catcher JT Realmuto on the injured list due to a lower back injury, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. The Phillies have dropped seven consecutive games as well. Between Realmuto's injury and the losing streak, there is not much going right in Philadelphia at the moment.
The Phillies continue to struggle . While the team has said that manager Rob Thomson's job security is not in question , it will still be something to monitor.
Realmuto, a 35-year-old catcher, is hitting .259/.344/.352 across 17 games played this season. He has one home run and two doubles as well. There was a time when Realmuto was arguably the best catcher in all of MLB. While the three-time All-Star may not be the same player he once was, he is still a valuable catcher to have on a roster.
Realmuto understands what it takes to manage a pitching staff as well. He is a veteran leader. The Phillies re-signed him this past offseason, with the hope being that his veteran prowess can further help the ball club.
It remains to be seen how much time JT Realmuto will end up spending on the injured list. If no setbacks occur, perhaps he could return sooner rather than later. The ball club will share updates on his injury status as they are made available.
Meanwhile, Philadelphia will attempt to end its seven-game losing streak on Wednesday night against the Cubs in Chicago . First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 PM EST at Wrigley Field.
