On Tuesday, the Philadelphia Phillies looked to continue their winning ways after taking the first game of their three-game set against the San Francisco Giants to begin the week. However, early on in their contest, the Phillies lost starting catcher JT Realmuto to a concerning injury. As per Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Realmuto had to exit the game early due to a bruised right foot.
The play that forced Realmuto's exit came in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs and one runners on second base for the Giants, Rafael Devers fouled off a 94-mph sinker at the bottom of the zone from Christopher Sanchez. Devers' foul tip hit Realmuto squarely on the foot, and he immediately winced in pain.
Realmuto is no longer a spring chicken, as he's already 35 years of age. Thus, there should be no surprise whatsoever that a painful blow like that would force the Phillies to err on the side of caution especially when there's so much baseball left to play this season.
The Phillies replaced Realmuto with backup catcher Rafael Marchan . At present, Giants starter Robbie Ray is dominating Philadelphia, limiting them to just two hits as a team through the first five innings of the game, which San Francisco is currently leading, 3-0.

The wear and tear catchers accumulate on their body throughout the season is no joke. Realmuto has been a full-time starting catcher in MLB since 2015, so while the younger version of himself could possibly have tanked that hit and carried on, there's not much sense in risking the health of an older version of the veteran catcher.
On the season, Realmuto has an OPS of .806 in eight games (32 appearances). He is making up for his decline in hitting productivity by being an on-base magnet .
