The Philadelphia Phillies have now lost six in a row. On Monday, it was another lopsided loss for the Phillies , as they fell 5-1 to the Chicago Cubs . The loss dropped them to 8-14 on the year, and puts them fourth in the NL East.
After the contest, manager Rob Thomson spoke to the media, discussing the loss and the struggles of Aaron Nola .
"After the first inning, it just seemed like he (Nola) had trouble getting ahead, trouble commanding his fastball. Wasn't landing his breaking ball. I don't know if the ball was a little slick or what," Thomson said. "Four walks, kind of uncharacteristic for Aaron. It was a tough one for him."
Nola went just 4.1 innings in the game, giving up six hits, four walks, and a home run. He would give up five runs, taking his second loss of the year, but did strike out five. He threw just 88 pitches, but only 46 were for strikes. The Phillies have lost four of the five times Nola has tean to the mound this year. In each of those games, he gave up three or more runs. Over his last two starts, he has given up eight runs in nine and a third innings of work with six walks.
The Phillies pitching has been struggling as a whole. They have lost ten of their last 12, giving up four or more runs in ten of the 12 games. The pitching staff is currently 28th in team ERA, while sitting 25th in WHIP and 30th in opponent batting average.
The Phillies will look to break their six-game skid on Tuesday night in Game 2 against the Cubs.
