The Boston Red Sox recently fired manager Alex Cora . Cora was linked to the Philadelphia Phillies ’ head coaching job immediately after his firing despite the fact that Rob Thomson was still managing in Philadelphia. On Tuesday, the Phillies fired Thomson which led many to wonder if Cora was coming to Philadelphia. Don Mattingly was named the interim manager, however, and Cora has reportedly already turned down a job offer from the team, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
“ Alex Cora was offered the Philadelphia Phillies ’ managerial job before Don Mattingly, but declined. He has decided to spend time with his family,” Nightengale reports.
Cora will certainly be able to manage again in MLB if he wants to do so. For now, he is going to spend time with his family. Meanwhile, Mattingly will look to help the Phillies climb back in the standings after their 9-19 start to the 2026 season.
The Phillies and Red Sox both had high expectations for the 2026 campaign, but they struggled throughout the first month of the season. Cora and Thomson were both fired within the same week. Boston and Philadelphia are hopeful that change will lead to more success on the field.
Mattingly does have MLB managing experience, so he should be ready for this new role. Of course, managing in Philadelphia comes with no shortage of pressure. He has previously managed in Los Angeles with the Dodgers , however, so Mattingly is used to the big market element of it all.
The Phillies will attempt to turn their season around as soon as possible.
