The Philadelphia Phillies have reportedly fired manager Rob Thomson following the team’s 9-19 start to the 2026 MLB season, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Don Mattingly is set to be the interim manager. The Phillies had high expectations entering the season but their performance has been lackluster. Thomson is the second manager in MLB to be fired within the past week, as the Boston Red Sox recently fired Alex Cora .
The Phillies released a statement following their decision to fire Thomson.
Rumors of a potential Thomson firing have swirled in recent weeks. Cora has been mentioned as a potential replacement in rumors as well, but Bob Nightengale of USA Today is reporting that Boston is committed to Mattingly for now and is not planning to bring in the former Red Sox manager.
“The Phillies are Don Mattingly’s s team for now with no plans to bring in Alex Cora or anyone else at this juncture,” Nightengale reported.
Anything can happen, though. Cora, assuming he wants to continue managing, will have no problem finding his next job. Thomson should not have too much trouble either. While the Phillies have clearly struggled in 2026, the ball club has found success in recent years. Thomson finishes with a 355-270 record after taking over the team in 2022. Philadelphia reached the World Series during the ’22 campaign as well.
For now, Mattingly will lead the way in Philadelphia. It remains to be seen if he will be the long-term answer, however. If he can lead the Phillies back into contention one has to imagine the ball club will consider giving him the role for years to come.
