With the Philadelphia Phillies firing manager Rob Thomson, there was no denying that some saw it coming due to the slow 9-19 start to the 2026 season. However, some players had nothing but good sentiments toward the former Phillies manager in Thomson, with star Trea Turner giving insight into how the aftermath has impacted the team.

Turner would speak after Philadelphia’s 7-0 win over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday, being asked to delve into how the ball club feels with Thomson fired. The 32-year-old wouldn’t hold back in saying how the team “felt the heaviness of the day.”

“It was tough,” Turner said, via NBC Sports. “It’s hard to put into words. I think we all kind of felt the heaviness of the day and just a weird morning. I’ve never been through something like this…but it’s not fun. It’s something you never want to see happen. But we had to move on and kind of focus on the game eventually, and there’ll still be more conversations had and just talk about things to where we can get better and how to improve as a club.”

Looking at the game itself, the Philles got a much-needed win under the circumstances with Don Mattingly getting his first win in his debut as the interim manager, and Turner recording four hits. One interesting notion that star Bryce Harper said about the Thomson firing is that the team, in some ways, makes those types of decisions due to the poor play from the players, with Turner echoing the same sentiments.

“We got in this situation because the guys on the field weren’t playing good enough. And we all know that, we take responsibility for it, and we got to do something about it. So clean up some things, and go out there and just compete and have fun and play that Philly baseball that we know how to play. And tonight was that,” Turner said.

Philadelphia looks to turn around its season, with the rest of the series against the Giants on Wednesday and Thursday.
