The Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds were recently involved in an incident, as Pirates pitcher Chris Devenski appeared to throw at Reds rookie Sal Stewart . On Tuesday, Devenski and Pirates manager Don Kelly reportedly received suspensions, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
“ Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Chris Devenski receives three-game suspension and is fined for throwing at Sal Stewart of the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday and manager Don Kelly is suspended one game and will miss tonight’s game vs. Arizona ,” Nightengale reported before then noting that Devenski’s suspension was reduced to two games .
Stewart is one of the best rookies in baseball . He has helped the Reds upset expectations this season . The same can be said for Pittsburgh, however.
Cincinnati is currently 20-15 and in third place in the National League Central standings. Meanwhile, the Pirates are 19-16 and in fourth place in the NL Central.
While Pittsburgh trails Cincinnati, the Pirates swept the Reds this past weekend. The Pirates are clearly finding momentum right now.
Devenski’s suspension will not help in that regard. The Reds and Pirates have a rivalry, though, so there is often added tension when the NL Central opponents go head-to-head.
Overall, the entire division has performed well for the most part. The Milwaukee Brewers , who were one of the favorites entering the year, are in last place despite holding a record of above .500 at 18-16. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Cardinals are in second place while the Chicago Cubs lead the division.
It seems as if any of these ball clubs could end up earning an NL Central division victory this year.
