Pirates Walked-Off by Giants on Mother’s Day; Bad Defense in 12th
The Pittsburgh Pirates were walked-off 7-6 by the San Francisco Giants in the series rubber match on Mother’s Day at Orcale Park.
Scoring Plays
Top 1st, 1-0 PIT: Nick Gonzales singled home Oneil Cruz against Tyler Mahle to get the Pirates (22-19) on the board early.
Top 2nd. 2-0 PIT:Konnor Griffin hit a laser over the center field fence for his third home run of the year. The 413-foot blast left his bat at 110.2 mph.
Bottom 3rd, 2-1 PIT: Luis Arraez got the Giants (16-24) on the board with an RBI single off Bubba Chandler
Bottom 4th, 2-2:The Giants evened the score when Heliot Ramos hammered a solo shot to left-center off Chandler.
Top 5th, 3-2 PIT:The Pirates quickly reclaimed the lead on Oneil Cruz’s opposite-field home run off Mahle. Cruz’s solo homer was his 10th of the season.
Top 6th, 4-2 PIT: Spencer Horwitz delivered a two-out RBI double to left-center, which knocked Mahle out of the game.
Bottom 6th, 4-4: Isaac Mattson relieved Chandler and allowed a pair of runs to score. Rafael Devers and Heliot Ramos hit back-to-back doubles to bring the Giants within one. Later in the inning, Matt Chapman doubled home Ramos.
Top 10th, 6-4 PIT:Automatic runner Nick Gonzales moved up to third and Marcell Ozuna was hit by a pitch. Spencer Horwitz delivered a two-run double to right-center off Joel Peguero .
Bottom 10th, 6-6: Willy Adames delivered a two-out, two-run single to left field off Yohan Ramírez to tie the game.
Bottom 12th,7-6 PIT:With the bases loaded and Justin Lawrence (0-2) on the mound, Jesús Rodríguez looped a base hit into shallow right. Heliot Ramos didn’t break from third immediately, but Ryan O’Hearn was late getting the ball in, allowing the winnign run to score.
Key Moments
The Pirates had the based loaded with two outs in the top of the 12th but Konnor Griffin lined out to third against Ryan Borucki (1-1).
Matt Chapman looked like he flew out to right field but the ball kicked off Ryan O’Hearn’s glove to give the Giants second and third with one out. After an intentional walk, Jesús Rodríguez delivered the walk-off blow.
Player of the Game
Willy Adames finished with three hits and delivered a clutch two-out hit to send the game to the 11th.
