“Skinner was a member of the 1960 World Series Championship Pirates and a coach on the 1979 World Series Championship team. He made his Major League debut with the Bucs in 1954 and played nine of his 12 seasons in Pittsburgh,” the team said, while also releasing an image of Skinner from his playing days.
Skinner primarily worked as an outfielder. He played his last Major League Baseball season in 1966, with the St. Louis Cardinals . In his playing career, he suited up for the Pirates, Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds .
Skinner worked as a manager after he stopped playing baseball. He spent time managing the Philadelphia Phillies , as well as one season with the San Diego Padres .
From 1970-1988, Skinner worked as a coach for several teams including the Pirates. He was a coach in Pittsburgh from 1974-1976, and then again with the team from 1979-1985. He was coach on the 1979 World Series champion team.
Skinner’s final job in MLB was as a coach for the Atlanta Braves , from 1986-1988. He also won a World Series championship in 1964, while playing for the Cardinals.
The 1979 Pirates team would be the last club to win the World Series for the franchise. Pittsburgh has struggled mightily since then, including consecutive losing seasons from 1993-2012. The Pirates haven’t made the postseason since 2015.
This season, the Pirates hold a 19-16 record . Pittsburgh is currently fourth in the NL Central, after sweeping the Cincinnati Reds recently in a three-game series.
