New offensive lineman Brock Hoffman fits that mold perfectly.
Signed to a one-year deal in free agency after a gritty tenure with the Dallas Cowboys, the 26-year-old interior lineman is already making noise in the battle for a starting guard spot. At 6-foot-4 and 302 pounds, Hoffman brings a versatile resume, having logged 16 starts across both guard positions and center. But it's his demeanor, not just his utility, that has captured the attention of the coaching staff this offseason.
Hoffman doesn't just block defenders; he seeks to finish them. It is a blue-collar mindset forged long before he reached the NFL.
"My dad always taught me to play football the right way, which is nasty," Hoffman told Steelers Now .
That philosophy is exactly what the Steelers need as they recalibrate the offensive front. With vacancy at left guard, Hoffman faces stiff competition from incumbent Spencer Anderson and rookie third-round pick Gennings Dunker .
Yet, Hoffman's familiarity with the system and his punishing style give him a distinct advantage when the pads come on. In a franchise that measures success by physical dominance, a player who views "nasty" as the standard is always right at home.

Acquired: Signed as an unrestricted free agent on March 24, 2026. Hoffman agreed to a one-year, $2.5 million contract that includes a $750,000 signing bonus. He previously spent parts of four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys after entering the league as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech in 2022.
Last Year:Hoffman appeared in all 17 regular-season games for the Dallas Cowboys, making seven crucial starts down the stretch. Hoffman showcased his trademark versatility by logging significant snaps at center and both guard positions, stepping into the lineup to anchor an offense that finished second in the NFL in total yards and scoring. Pro Career:Hoffman originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia Tech in 2022, spending his rookie summer with the Cleveland Browns before landing on the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad. Over the next three seasons in Dallas, he developed from a developmental depth piece into a premier interior swingman, appearing in 54 total regular-season games with 16 starts.
Known for his punishing finishing style and elite versatility, he logged significant first-team reps at center and both guard positions, stepping in seamlessly for injured veterans like Zack Martin and Cooper Beebe to anchor some of the NFL's highest-scoring offenses. Across his entire four-year professional career, Hoffman has been charged with permitting just a sack over hundreds of competitive pass-blocking snaps.

A highly durable and technically sound anchor, Hoffman started 46 of the 47 games he appeared in across his collegiate career, split between Coastal Carolina and Virginia Tech. He began his journey at Coastal Carolina, making history in 2017 as the first true freshman to ever start at center for the program before shifting to right guard in 2018, where he didn't allow a single sack all season.
After transferring to Virginia Tech and sitting out 2019 due to NCAA transfer rules, Hoffman became the centerpiece of the Hokies' offensive line. In 2020, he started all 11 games at center, twice earning ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week honors while paving the way for a unit that led the ACC in rushing offense (240.1 yards per game). He capped off his college career in 2021 by starting 11 games across center and left guard, ultimately earning honorable mention All-ACC honors before declaring for the NFL Draft .

Hoffman signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Steelers on March 24, 2026, to solidify the interior of their offensive line. The deal includes a $750,000 signing bonus, which represents the only fully guaranteed money in the agreement. Because it is a straight one-year deal with no void years attached, his entire contract counts directly against the current financial ledger, giving Hoffman a flat $2,500,000 salary cap hit for the 2026 season.
While Hoffman credits his dad with teaching him to play the right way, it was actually his mother, Stephanie, who first demanded he play with an edge. Hoffman revealed that back in the third grade, his mom straight-up told him he was playing soft (using some colorful language to drive the point home). He took it to heart and promised himself he'd never let anyone call him a soft player again—sparking his reputation as an on-field bully and a notorious trash-talker.
